2. The book “Celebrating Families” is a book that describes fourteen different types of families: single-parent, LGBTQ families, multiracial families, adopted children, blended families, etc. It shares how each family is different but reminds the reader that they are all equally special in their own way.

3. I would want to have this book in my classroom as something that my students would have access too, but I would also make it a point to read this to my class as a whole to create an opportunity to have a discussion about the book. I think it would be good to do this early on in order for my students to begin to understand that even though they all come from different backgrounds they are all equal and want to learn. I think that this could be used anywhere from first to fourth grade – it is always a good thing to have that type of discussion in a classroom and there are many ways that an activity could be done along with reading the book.

4. I think that the topics that this book connects to a lot of the topics that we discussed in class. It talks about how important it is to recognize where we, as individuals, come from and that was a major theme throughout the entire semester. Concepts such as “color blindness” are ones that this book is able to rid of and focus on the fact that we are all equal and we each bring something special into the classroom. This semester we focused a lot on racial and cultural identity, gender/sexual identity, and social class; this book touches on each of those plus much more and how each of those things makes students a little bit different than the student sitting next to them but only in positive ways.

  1. This looks like a terrific read-aloud book about family diversity! (A subject near and dear to my heart!) Thanks for the post. Very upbeat, entertaining, and comes with a discussion guide.
